BRAKES

Check brakes after first use and after first laden journey.

·         Check all return springs

·         Check the return travel of the rams/cylinders

·         Check all brakes including parking brakes, operate and release properly.

Check and test the brakes before intensive use and every 3 months.

Check the thickness of the brake linings and replace (for minimum thicknesses contact Tyremart  01400 283820).

FITTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPLACING BRAKE SHOES

  1. STRIP OFF THE HUB AND DRUM

  2. UNDO THE PIVOT NUT ON THE BACK PLATE

  3. REMOVE THE OLD SHOES

  4. FIT THE NEW SHOES

  5. PUT THE PIVOT NUT BACK ON AND HAND TIGHTEN

  6. RE-FIT THE HUB AND DRUM AND FULLY TIGHTEN THE CASTELLATED NUT, THEN TURN BACK TO RE-LOCATE THE HOLE FOR THE R-CLIP

  7. PULL THE BRAKE LEVER ON LEFT AND RIGHT - THEN HOLD THE LEVER ON.  WHILST THE LEVER IS HELD WITH THE BRAKES ON, FULLY TIGHTEN THE PIVOT NUT

  8. SPIN THE HUB AND DRUM TO MAKE SURE IT IS FREE

  9. REPLACE THE SPLIT PIN

  10. MAKE THE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS FOR APPLYING THE BRAKES

After replacing the brake shoes remember to centre the brake shoes:

  1. Disconnect the brake ram

  2. SLIGHTLY slacken off the castellated nut on the back plate

  3. Operate the brake lever in the correct direction (direction of the actuator thrust) by pulling on the lever by hand. This is easily done by placing a length of pipe over the brake lever. This will increases the leverage.

  4. Whilst pulling on the lever, re-tighten the castellated nut

BEARINGS

Check the wheel bearings for play:

·         After the first 1000 km

·         Before intensive use

·         Every 6 months

·         Every 25000 km

To check the wheel bearings:

1.       Jack wheel off the ground

2.       Turn the wheel in both directions to check for rough points or friction

3.       Turn the wheel quickly and check for unusual noises such as grating..

4.       Grip the wheel top and bottom and check for play by trying to tilt it.

If there is any play in the bearing, adjust the wheel bearing by:

1.       Jack the axle off the ground and remove the wheel.

2.       Remove the hubcap, remove the R-clip or split pin

3.       Tighten the castellated nut to remove all internal play, and then release the castellated nut by a quarter of a turn until hole for the pin is aligned with the notch in the castellated nut.

4.       Insert a the R-clip or a new split pin, check the hub rotates freely and replace the hubcap

If the bearing is damaged or worn, the Bearings AND Seals should ALL be replaced.

Lubricate the bearings every 2 years or every 50,000 km and also when the brake shoes are replaced. In harsh conditions, bearings should be lubricated more frequently. The blue grease used in the ADR axles is HIGH TECH LITHOGREASE 3  (KP3-N20)

A bearings lifetime will depend on the load, speed of travel, operating conditions, adjustment and lubrication.

HUB CAPS

Missing or damaged hubcaps must be replaced immediately. Dirt penetrating into the hub will result in bearing damage. For bolt on type hubcaps, check and re-tighten fixing screws regularly (every 6 months).
