Tubular body - Black Bull
The guarantee travelling speed, flexible use, duration and reduced maintenance are the basic goals behind development of the new Black Bull trailer axle series. The results were reached after two years study, experimentation, all-round tests on materials, production methods and with millions of euro invested. One of the main characteristics of the new Black Bull series is the reduction in axle body weight by over 50%, obtained by replacing the traditional billet with a high resistance tubular profile, made in high elastic limit steel ideal for both industrial and agricultural use. This does not just mean greater resistance to use conditions, but also less weight and a greater axle body section, thus more useful load for the vehicle and better behaving suspensions due to a lighter non suspended mass. Automatic spindle welding on the Black Bull body is the result of a study developed in the ADR & Colaert research department in collaboration with the study centres of the main steelworks and expert welders. The pressing system, an ADR original, has enabled us to create a spindle that can guarantee perfect jointing with the tubular part, thus precise, long-lasting welding, no stress discontinuity and an excellent weight-resistance ratio. The new Black Bull trailer axle series is for all uses from agricultural to industrial and has a speed range from 20 to 100 km/h.

SELF STEERING AXLES

On vehicles with close axles, self-steering guarantees vehicle stability and improves manoeuvring. However, being ready to follow bends is conditioned by weight, speed and type of tyres used. In particular, highly deformable, strongly adhering low pressure tyres, fitted to new farm machinery, means that self-steering reacts late so the vehicle can have difficulty re-aligning its wheels, with driving, road-holding and abnormal tread wear problems. With the new, patented ADR & Colaert self-steering axles, these problems belong to the past: steering sensitivity adapts to the wheels and resolves problems linked to low pressure tyres. The heart of innovation is the articulation joint: new geometry and mechanical conception. The special inclination means it uses vehicle weight and wheel diameter as “motors” to control reactions and make sure that self-steering is always “made-to-measure” for the application it is used on. Besides innovative geometry, this exceptional sensitivity comes from new generation materials, mechanical precision and careful assembly. The ADR & Colaert self-steering range, from 7 to 16 tons per axle, makes this important technological innovation available for manufacturers of all trailer types, both agricultural and industrial. The possibility to equip these self-steer axles with all the ADR & Colaert brake range makes them even more versatile and means axle and suspension groups can be made for all needs.

COMMANDED STEERING AXLES (STC)

An important innovation for the safety and manoeuvring of farm machinery comes from the ADR & Colaert study centre. In the forefront for its self-steering axles, for which it has several patents, the group has now revolutionised the sector with STC, its patented oleo-dynamic steering control, solving the reverse manoeuvring problem for trailers with several axles, so the operator always knows “where to put the wheels”. In the best ADR tradition, design is aimed at function and simplicity: the system is piloted by the tractor, but is only based in the trailer, so each tractor can hook it on and make it work straight away. STC has no rivals in guaranteeing maximum manoeuvrability for new generation farm machinery, with low pressure tyres. Manageable and safe. With its patented geometry, STC keeps the trailer on the road even if its directional system has gone wrong, and the user can continue its journey carefully. Like all ADR & Colaert products, STC is compatible with the rest of the group’s products, from suspensions to brakes. The reduced distance between wheel rotation axle and articulation joint pin makes steering really easy and enables the oleo-dynamic system to work with relatively low pressures so each minimum change in direction by the tractor is transmitted to trailer wheels. This characteristic is important when reversing where the comparison with commanded self-steering is absolutely not compromised. Furthermore, joint compactness means wide section wheels can be used. Providing lots of advantages, and care over safety. The special STC geometry means you can keep the trailer headed in the right direction even if the oleo-dynamic control system breaks down so the user can carry on his journey carefully.

SPECIAL AXLES

Another example of how ADR group is 100% committed to the axle world is the fact that it dedicates people and entire production departments to studying, experimenting and developing all those products going beyond normal traditional axle standards. Variable track axles, oscillating axles, lowered and bi-directional axles are just some examples of how ADR group goes all directions in each single special application sector to best satisfy the different market requests and those of the most demanding customers each year. A continually evolving market expecting ever more performing and personalised trailers from manufacturers all the time; for this reason axle manufacturers have to know how to design and develop their products based on end user needs; to supply new, not obsolete, innovative, resistant products and, above all, useful for specific needs, all the time. ADR group manages to cover this sector really well, regularly supplying the axle market with models that can be called “special”. All the acknowledgement and awards won by ADR group over recent years at the international trade fair EIMA prove it.

MECHANICAL SUSPENSION

Bogies
The ADR group bogie range is the “turnkey” solution for farm machine suspensions. Simple and robust, the bogie is delivered assembled, complete with axles and ready to be installed under the vehicle. On request, ADR & Colaert can also supply the supporting counter-plates with which the suspension group can be fixed to the frame. For each group of bogies, both overslung and underslung. The underslung version is also advisable for high wheel vehicles, with special stability needs when braking. Our technical service is available to help with your choice.
The range includes:
- Bogies with multi-blade springs 8 to 28 ton capacity
- Bogies with parabolic springs 8 to 28 ton capacity. Wheel bases available go from 920 to 1820 mm.

Tandems
“K parabolic spring suspensions” are different manufacturing solutions, for different fields: 76 mm wide parabolic spring suspensions, with reaction rods, for average and heavy trailers speeds over 40 km/h. heavy-duty solution, 100 mm wide springs and reinforced structure. 80 mm wide parabolic spring suspensions, simplified layout for farming machines and a heavy-duty solution with 100 mm wide springs.

PNEUMATIC SUSPENSION

Pneumatic suspensions are the most advanced and versatile for all types of conditions. Very simple from a manufacturing point of view and versatile, because traditional springs have been replaced by air springs, controlled by a pneumatic plant enabling you to:
- change trim "inflating or deflating" the air springs
- self-level the vehicle independent of the load weighing on the axles
- compensate braking actions automatically varying suspension rigidity based on stress
- stabilise the vehicle on a bend automatically varying air spring pressure based on road reactions, to correct machine trim.
- interact with braking plant safety devices (braking corrector, ABS, anti-skidding)
- equip vehicles with a practically unlimited number of axles
At first, the use of these suspensions on farming vehicles was a problem as tractors did not normally have a pneumatic plant. The increased speed of these machines has meant that tractor fittings are just about the same as those on trucks, and therefore pneumatic suspensions, like many other devices typical of industrial vehicles, are now normally used on agricultural machines. Vehicles transporting animals or delicate goods were the first to draw advantage from this important innovation.

HYDRAULIC SUSPENSION

Hydrokey
New generation farming machines need high performance suspensions. Hydrokey is the new oleo-dynamic suspension line created by ADR to respond to farming transport evolution. The hydraulic plant is standard on all tractors and a trailer with oleo-dynamic suspensions becomes compatible with the motor straight away with no special intervention. With oleo-dynamic suspensions you can change the trim without affecting vehicle stability and safety. A liquid determines trim, but a gas guarantees the suspension: two separate fluids with two separate functions. The oleo-dynamic suspension guarantees excellent adherence when braking and maximum stability, thanks to its innovative Key-system, a transversal stabilizer compensating for the reactions on a bend. Effective in all service conditions: the rolling of traditional suspensions is a distant memory even with low pressure tyres. It distributes the load on the single axles, with a self-levelling effect, no change to the suspension’s elastic features: just by acting on liquid volume. By coupling Hydrokey + STC, the ADR steering control system, you guarantee maximum vehicle manoeuvrability, creating a full-hydraulic and guaranteeing balanced load distribution on trailer wheels thus helping steering to function correctly, reducing reactions at the tractor’s steering wheel.

Hydrosafe
Hydrosafe is an independent arm hydraulic suspension. Wheels are glued to the ground in all service conditions: stability with no comparisons on bends and safe braking on irregular ground. However, a machine’s stability is not just guaranteed by the special geometry of independent suspensions. Robustness in farming is an irremissible “must”: a rigorous test program in the field has rapidly led to a product evolving till the creation of what ADR technical staff feel can fully express the meaning of the term Hydrosafe. The tubular or boxed structures characterising the first two versions, similar to road vehicle suspensions, were not considered satisfactory: thus the Hydrosafe 3 evolution with its patented mono-block arms integrating both the wheel hub spindles and steering articulation, in the versions fitted with STC. No welding necessary in the most critical areas on a structure put to so much stress.

SOIL

In agriculture you often find “samurai” soil, ready to fight soil working machines and treatment, even the best kind, using anything they have – stones, limestone, rock, mud. Mechanical parts are often subject to dangerous wear. Material technology and quality cannot always protect them and keep their efficiency in tact. The most vulnerable parts, besides wheel hubs, are undoubtedly bearings, vital but delicate. Though screened, the intrusion of gravel, earth or other items can seriously compromise operations. To avoid problems and breakdowns, machine working conditions have to be monitored continuously and accurate, frequent maintenance can be the right solution. That is where the ADR soil Project comes in. The part manufacturer becomes a co-protagonist in machine design, to develop targeted solutions for operations the machine has to handle . That has been the ADR company culture for many years now, and is also its strategy for the future. A product’s success comes from its “adaptability” but mainly from project quality. Through ADR soil, our technicians create specific components for machines and soil treatment, which in just one function, can respond to several application needs.
